Subhashitams
अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् । उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥
Thoughts of “mine” and “theirs” are the mark of a narrow mind. For the generous-hearted, the whole world is family.
उद्यमेनैव सिध्यन्ति कार्याणि न मनोरथैः । न हि सुप्तस्य सिंहस्य प्रविशन्ति मुखे मृगाः ॥
Success comes through effort, not mere wishes — no animal walks into the mouth of a sleeping lion.
न कञ्चिदपि जानाति किं कस्य श्वो भविष्यति । अतः श्वः करणीयानि कुर्यादद्यैव बुद्धिमान् ॥
No one knows what tomorrow holds for whom. A wise person does today what is meant for tomorrow.
सदयं हृदयं यस्य भाषितं सत्यभूषितम् । कायः परहिते यस्य कलिस्तस्य करोति किम् ॥
What can कलि do to one whose heart is kind, whose words are adorned with truth, and whose body serves others?
आचार्यात् पादमादत्ते पादं शिष्यः स्वमेधया । पादं सब्रह्मचारिभ्यः पादं कालक्रमेण च ॥
A student gains a quarter from their teacher, a quarter through their own intellect, a quarter from peers, and the last quarter comes with time.
छायामन्यस्य कुर्वन्ति तिष्ठन्ति स्वयमातपे । फलान्यपि परार्थाय वृक्षाः सत्पुरुषा इव ॥
Trees stand in the sun to give shade to others, and their fruit too is for others. Good people likewise endure hardship and give what they have earned for the welfare of all.
त्यजेदेकं कुलस्यार्थे ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् । ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत् ॥
One person may be set aside for the good of the family; a family for a village; a village for the nation; and the world itself for self-realization.
उपकारिषु यः साधुः साधुत्वे तस्य को गुणः । अपकारिषु यः सांधुः स साधुरिति कीर्तितः ॥
Being good to those who are good to you has no special merit. The one who is good even to those who cause harm — that person is truly a saint.
न किञ्चित् सहसा कार्यं कार्यं कार्यविदा क्कचित् । क्रियते चेत् विविच्यैव तस्य श्रेयः करस्थितम् ॥
A wise person never acts in haste. Done with care and deliberation, success is surely at hand.
वयमिह परितुष्टा वल्कलैस्त्वं दुकूलैः सम इह परितोषो निर्विशेषो विशेषः । स तु भवति दरिद्रो यस्य तृष्णा विशाला मनसि च परितुष्टे कोऽर्थवान् को दरिद्रः ॥
A yogi tells a king: “I am content here with bark garments, as you are with silk — our contentment is one and the same. One consumed by desire is truly poor; when the mind is content, who is rich and who is poor?”
