Culture
- Each वेद has four main parts: संहिता, ब्राह्मण, आरण्यक, and उपनिषद्.
- The ऋग्वेद is divided into 8 अष्टकs and 10 मण्डलs.

There are about 108 उपनिषद्s. The ten principal ones are:

- The three main नास्तिक दर्शनs are: चार्वाक, जैन, and बौद्ध.
- Since बौद्ध दर्शन has four schools — सौत्रान्तिक, वैभाषिक, माध्यमिक (शून्यवाद), and योगाचार (विज्ञानवाद) — the नास्तिक दर्शनs can also be counted as six.

Even animals help one who walks the righteous path. A brother will abandon one who goes astray.
Whatever is here is found elsewhere; what is not here is nowhere.
The name महाभारत is fitting — great in both depth and volume.
Of the महाभारत’s lakh verses, over 800 are considered व्यासरहस्य — the secret message of व्यास.

काव्य is of three kinds: गद्य, पद्य, and चम्पू. It can also be classified as:

कालिदास wrote three plays: मालविकाग्निमित्रम्, विक्रमोर्वशीयम्, and अभिज्ञानशाकुन्तलम्.
शकुन्तला was विश्वामित्र’s daughter and sage कण्व’s foster-daughter. राजर्षि दुष्यन्त met her at कण्व’s hermitage, married her, and gave her his signet ring before returning to his kingdom. Once sage दुर्वासस् visited the hermitage; शकुन्तला, lost in thoughts of दुष्यन्त, failed to notice him, and he cursed her to be forgotten by her husband. With no other recourse, शकुन्तला and her mother मेनका went to the hermitage of मारीच, where she gave birth to दुष्यन्त’s son, भरत. When a fisherman found the lost ring, दुष्यन्त remembered शकुन्तला. Husband, wife, and son were reunited at मारीच’s hermitage, and with the sage’s blessing they all returned to the kingdom.
Among काव्यs, नाटकम् is the most beautiful; among नाटकs, शकुन्तला is the finest; within it, the fourth act; and within that act, four specific verses are considered the best.
भवभूति dramatized the उत्तरकाण्ड of the रामायण. The story includes a fight between कुश and चन्द्रकेतु, लक्ष्मण’s son. Sage वाल्मीकि presented सीता, and then लव and कुश, to राम.
The author is भट्टनारायण. It is an episode from the महाभारत. वेणी means braid of hair and संहार means tying. The play opens with कृष्ण’s peace efforts on behalf of the पाण्डवs and ends with the killing of दुर्योधन and the tying of द्रौपदी’s braid. In six acts, the playwright dramatizes the महाभारत from the उद्योगपर्व to the शल्यपर्व, sustaining the reader’s interest throughout.
The author is शूद्रक. It is the love story of चारुदत्त and वसन्तसेना. चारुदत्त, once wealthy, is now a poor man of noble character deeply in love with a courtesan, वसन्तसेना. वसन्तसेना deposits her ornaments with him; they are then stolen by a thief. चारुदत्त returns his wife’s pearl necklace with word that the deposited ornaments were lost in a dice game. Meanwhile the stolen ornaments reach वसन्तसेना through her maid मदनिका. When वसन्तसेना comes to return the ornaments (claiming she lost the pearl necklace at dice), चारुदत्त’s son is weeping for a golden cart — he has only a clay cart. वसन्तसेना places her ornaments into the clay cart. A mix-up of carts puts वसन्तसेना in the hands of the villain शकार, who strangles her and leaves her for dead, then frames चारुदत्त. चारुदत्त is condemned in court and sent to the gallows. A monk helps वसन्तसेना survive; she appears in time to expose शकार. चारुदत्त is freed and marries वसन्तसेना.
The play is named after the clay cart episode (मृत् = clay, शकटिका = toy cart). It vividly depicts everyday life in ancient society, and its language is close to spoken usage.
स्वप्नवासवदत्ता is a play by भास. Its characters include king उदयन, queens वासवदत्ता and पद्मावती, and minister यौगन्धरायण. For the kingdom’s good, वासवदत्ता and यौगन्धरायण devised a plan. With the help of पद्मावती’s brother, उदयन’s army defeated the enemies. Later, when यौगन्धरायण appeared at court with वासवदत्ता, the king learned of the plan they had carried out. वासवदत्ता’s character is noble; यौगन्धरायण is a minister devoted to his country.
